KENYA ALLIANCE TEAM SEEKS PARTNERSHIP WITH COUNTY TO GROW MACADAMIA NUTS

Kenya Alliance Company is seeking partnership with the County Government of Kakamega to grow macadamia nuts in the County.

Speaking when they paid a courtesy call on Deputy Governor H.E Prof Philip Kutima, Kenya Alliance team said Western region has good soils and weather to support macadamia farming.

Prof Kutima said introduction of macadamia nuts farming will be an alternative cash crop for farmers and will benefit the region by improving its economy.

“This cash crop will be offering an alternative and even be a suplimentary source of income for our farmers,” said Prof Kutima.

He noted that he is looking forward to more business opportunities for the people of Kakamega through the expansion of agriculture within the region.

Mr Samuel Waithaka, the Group Manager, Kenya Nut Company, said Kakamega Region has suitable weather for macadamia farming.

He noted that they are seeking to provide cheap and readily available macadamia seedlings to farmers.

“The production of nuts is on the decline and we are scouting for this region because of the good weather and soil,” said Waithaka.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Madam Rachel Okumu said the long term objective of this project is to empower farmers economically.

Chief Officer Agriculture Mr Jeremiah Namunyu, Mr Eric Moudi, Mr Nathan Lumuchele, Mr Kenneth Njeru among other senior officials were present.
