H.E Governor Fernandes Barasa is committed to improving rural livelihoods through dairy farming, aligning with his broader goals for food security and wealth creation. To support this, the Agriculture Department, led by CECM Mophat Mandela, launched heifer distribution under the One Cow per Household program across 12 sub-counties.

Now in the “pass-on” phase, each household gives the first female in-calf heifer to another, ensuring fairness, sustainability and community empowerment through livestock asset sharing.

Mr Mandela noted that since inception, Over 2,000 in-calf heifers have been distributed so far, with the long-term objective of maintaining consistent milk supply for the upcoming Malava processing plant.

Livestock Chief Officer Ms Jessica Weku, during a field visit accross the 12 subcounties, praised the initiativeโ€™s impact and announced that starting the next financial year, the department will support the initiative further by distributing 600 calves accross all 60 wards.

The program spanning the next 1 week is being spearheaded by the Kakamega County Dairy Development Corporation. Also present were county officials led by Livestock Director, Mr Henry Odanga alongside KDDC CEO, Mr Ezekiel Lumbasi and others.
