Khayega Market has received a KShs. 200 million boost after Governor Fernandes Barasa today launched the Integrated Khayega Market Development Project in Shinyalu Sub-County, marking the commencement of a major facelift that will transform the market into a more modern and functional trading centre.
The project, being implemented under the Second Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP II) Urban Development Grant, will deliver cabro-paved surfaces and drainage systems, upgrade the C-Section Road to bitumen standards, improve water and sanitation facilities, install street lighting and reconstruct the Khayega Market Slaughterhouse.
The works, scheduled for completion within six months, are expected to improve accessibility, enhance the trading environment and provide safer and more functional facilities for traders, businesses and residents who rely on the market.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Barasa said Khayega Market has immense potential to become a stronger hub for trade and local enterprise. He said the County Government will ensure the works are delivered on schedule and to the required standards, while taking into account the views and priorities of market stakeholders.
The upgrade is part of the County Government of Kakamegaβs continued investment in urban infrastructure aimed at supporting local enterprises, strengthening economic activities and advancing the Wealth Creation and Infrastructure Development agenda.
Also present were Members of the County Assembly led by area MCA Hon. Charles Lwanga, Members of the County Executive led by the CECM for Lands, Housing, Urban Areas and Physical Planning Mr. Godfrey Owori, alongside other leaders.
