MALAVA WIDOWS GIFTED 1,000 IMPROVED KIENYEJI CHICKS UNDER GOVERNOR BARASA’S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

In a bid to uplift the economic status of widows across Kakamega County, the County Government of Kakamega, through the Department of Agriculture, today marked Eid celebrations with Malava Sub-County widows during which 1,000 improved kienyeji chicks were distributed to support their household incomes.
Representing Governor Fernandes Barasa during the handover, Chief Officer for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Kariuki, noted that the chicks distribution initiative is a key strategy by the County administration to economically empower vulnerable groups and promote self-sufficiency among widows. He emphasized that the program is designed not only to provide immediate support but also to create sustainable income-generating opportunities.
Chief Kariuki, further, assured the beneficiaries that the County government will facilitate market linkages once the chicks mature into fully grown chickens, ensuring that the women can access reliable markets for their poultry products.
On her part, Gender Advisor, Ms. Leah Khasandi, expressed appreciation to the County Government for prioritizing widow empowerment, noting that the program will significantly improve the livelihoods of the Malava widow groups.
