COUNTY GOVERNMENT STAFF PARTICIPATE IN “MJI WETU, WAJIBU WETU” MONTHLY CLEAN-UP EXERCISE.
The County Government of Kakamega today conducted the “Mji Wetu, Wajibu Wetu” clean-up exercise, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at promoting a clean, healthy, and attractive urban environment.
The exercise follows H.E. Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa’s recent Meet the People Tour in Kakamega Town, where he engaged residents and traders on issues affecting the business environment and service delivery. During the tour, the Governor pledged that his administration would take deliberate and practical measures to restore cleanliness, improve sanitation, and enhance the overall appearance of Kakamega Town as part of ongoing efforts to make it a modern, orderly, and business-friendly urban centre. Today’s exercise is one of the immediate interventions towards fulfilling that commitment.
Coordinated by the County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka, and led by County Executive Committee Members, the exercise brought together officers from various county departments who assembled at the County Headquarters before being deployed to different parts of Kakamega Town.
The teams carried out clean-up activities at bus parks, market centres, streets, shop corridors, drainage channels, and other public spaces through sweeping, litter collection, unclogging drainage systems, and proper waste disposal.
The initiative is intended to improve sanitation, prevent environmental pollution, enhance public health, and create a cleaner and more welcoming environment for residents, traders, investors, and visitors.
Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Omuhaka said the “Mji Wetu, Wajibu Wetu” campaign reflects the County Government’s commitment to translating the Governor’s vision into action. He urged residents, traders, institutions, members of the public and other stakeholders to embrace proper waste management and partner with the County Government in maintaining a clean environment, noting that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility.
Dr. Omuhaka further announced that the clean-up exercise will now be conducted every month under the County Government’s CSR programme to sustain cleanliness in Kakamega Town and other urban centres while fostering a lasting culture of civic responsibility and environmental stewardship.
This programme forms part of the County Government’s broader agenda of improving public health, protecting the environment, and creating cleaner, greener, and more liveable urban spaces across Kakamega County.
