COUNTY, KWTRP TO PARTNER IN RESEARCH ON USE OF RESIDUAL SAMPLES

The County Government of Kakamega, through the Department of Health Services, is set to partner with the Kenya Medical Research Institute Wellcome Trust Research Programme Kilifi (KWTRP) to conduct research aimed at improving patient health outcomes and strengthening disease surveillance.

The research will analyse 1,375 residual samples over one year, with additional testing considered to identify diseases. The findings will support disease surveillance, health planning and resource allocation.

KWTRP Project Coordinator, Dr. Collins Owino, noted that KEMRI will deploy an additional staff member to the laboratory department at Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCGTRH) to work full-time and enhance service delivery.

County Research Coordinator, Mr. Sudi Galo, said the findings will help map disease patterns and guide health strategies aimed at improving the quality of healthcare, in line with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s healthcare agenda.
