COUNTY, NAVCDP DISTRIBUTE AGROFORESTRY FRUIT TREES & FODDER SEEDLINGS TO FARMERS IN NZOIA WARD FOR SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT
The County Government, through the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), today distributed Hass avocado, tissue culture banana seedlings and vetiver grass to farmers in Nzoia Ward, Likuyani Sub-County.
The initiative, graced by CECM Mophat Mandela, promotes sustainable land management through agroforestry and terracing. The Nzoia Watershed, covering 944 hectares and benefiting 432 farmers, was identified through the PICD process and CIDP.
Mr. Mandela urged farmers to embrace climate-smart farming, noting that the initiative aligns with Governor Barasa’s food security and wealth creation agenda. He highlighted other ongoing interventions, including the reconstruction of the Butere Poultry Hatchery, which is expected to distribute over 60,000 chicks monthly while creating employment opportunities.
The programme, following farmer training, will also support water harvesting through farm ponds for irrigation, particularly benefiting farmers located far from the Mumunyonzo Irrigation Project. . Agriculture Chief Officer Emmanuel Kariuki urged farmers to maintain terraces to protect their soils from erosion and improve productivity.
