GOVERNOR BARASA DISBURSES KSHS 12 MILLION CYSWEP GRANTS TO EMPOWER YOUTH AND WOMEN IN KAKAMEGA
This afternoon, H.E. Governor FCPA Dr. Fernandes Barasa presided over the issuance of grants to beneficiaries of the third cohort of the County Youth Service and Women Empowerment Programme (CYSWEP) at Bukhungu Stadium.
A total of Kshs 12 million was disbursed to 120 groups drawn from all the 60 wards in Kakamega County, with each ward represented by two groups. Each group received Kshs 100,000 to support income-generating activities. The grants form part of the programme’s exit plan, aimed at helping beneficiaries move from short-term public service into sustainable self-employment.
CYSWEP, established in 2019, is a key programme of the County Government that provides temporary employment while equipping youth and women with practical skills, discipline, and business knowledge. Over time, the programme has played an important role in improving livelihoods and supporting economic growth at the grassroots.
To prepare beneficiaries for this transition, the County Government organized them into registered groups, supported them to open bank accounts, and provided financial literacy training in partnership with Equity Bank and the Co-operative Bank of Kenya. This training focused on savings, investment, and proper management of group enterprises.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Governor Barasa emphasised on funds responsibly, transparency, and investment in viable projects that will generate sustainable income. He assured the County Government’s continued commitment to supporting youth and women through empowerment programmes.
On political matters, the Governor urged leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, particularly UDA, to avoid internal conflicts with ODM partners and instead focus on unity and service delivery.
The event was attended by Members of the County Assembly led by area MCA Hon. Modesta Auka, Members of the County Executive led by the CECM for Social Services CPA Jackline Masicha, Mr. Nelson Kamoti, the CEO of Arlington Academy of Hope from Uganda, on a benchmarking mission and other senior county officials.
