COUNTY KICKSTARTS CONSTRUCTION PROCESS OF 360 HOUSES

The County Government of Kakamega has initiated the construction of 360 housing units for vulnerable residents in all the 60 Wards of Kakamega County.

Chief Officer for Social Services, Children Services, Gender and Culture Ms Leah Khasandi on Tuesday, instructed County Polytechnics Principals, who have been contracted by the County Government to construct the houses, to ensure they conform to the timeframes and required standards as outlined in the bill of quantities (BQ).

According to Ms Khasandi who represented the In-charge CECM Mr Mophat Mandela during the contract signing ceremony with the Polytechnic Heads; the County will also install a complete rain water harvesting system including a 1000 litres water tank for each of the houses to aid in water collection for the beneficiaries.

The Chief Officer stated that the programme is part of the County’s social protection programmes under the Social Protection Policy that is at its final stages of development by the Department, aimed at according the less privileged members of the society better living standards. She directed the Principals to ensure the task is completed by end of August 2023.

Further, Ms Khasandi called for involvement of all relevant stakeholders including Members of the County Assembly whom she termed key in monitoring of the implementation in their respective Wards. A total of 1800 houses are expected to be constructed in the next five years.

Present were County Solicitor Mildred Wandema, Director Social Services Ms Gaudencia Otipa and other County Officers from the Departments of Social Services and Public Works.
