IFAD MISSION COMMENDS KAKAMEGA’S PREPAREDNESS FOR INReMP ROLL-OUT

An oversight mission from IFAD has commended Kakamega County’s preparedness for the Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP), a government flagship initiative tackling environmental degradation, climate change and rural poverty.

INReMP is financed by the Government of Kenya IFAD, the Green Climate Fund and GEF and targets to boost food security, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods among vulnerable rural households. Kakamega is one of ten counties targeted under Phase One.

The mission reviewed the programme’s alignment with Kenya’s Vision 2030 blue print, ASTGS, BETA, Kenya’s NDCs and the County’s Integrated Development Plan. The priority interventions include restoring forests, wetlands and rangelands, while promoting climate-smart value chains such as dairy, poultry, apiculture, fruit trees and horticulture.

Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives CECM Mophat Mandela affirmed the county’s commitment to working with the national government and partners to deliver lasting impact, especially for women and youth.

The delegation’s head Mr. Dickson Liyayi Magotsi commended the county’s progress and emphasized strong partnerships to achieve the three INReMP’s outcomes namely Environmental sustainability, Improved livelihoods and nutrition, and stronger inclusive institutions.

The programme targets 407,176 vulnerable households nationwide. Kakamega will receive Kshs 81 million this financial year to establish structures, identify beneficiaries and prioritise degraded landscapes for intervention. The project’s total cost is Ksh 34 Billion.
